Plantage is a stylish residential area, home to many parks and gardens and beautiful buildings. The street names remind of the neighbourhood’s original function: they all start with the word ‘Plantage’. This pattern was prescribed by the late 17th century city government, who wanted to lay out a plantation on the east of the city centre: a hiking area with summer cottages, gardens and a number of hostels. The area also became the location of the Hortus Botanicus and Artis Zoo.

The Artis Zoo, established in 1838 is the oldest zoo on the European Continent.
