Artis
ARTIS (AMSTERDAM ZOO)

Amsterdam’s zoo is located in a Southern area of the city known as Plantage. It was instituted in 1838 and still boasts a 19th century ambience. With more than 6000 animals representing 700-some species, the zoo offers a glimpse of wildlife from around the world that's sure to prove

Artis
enlightening to kids and adults alike. On the grounds, you'll also an aquarium, a planetarium, botanical gardens, and two museums devoted to zoology and geology. Artis's renowned Aquarium brings you face to face with … the secret life of Amsterdam's canals! Around the zoo you'll find many more Dutch and European animal and plant species, as well as more exotic ones.

HORTUS BOTANICUS PLANTAGE (BOTANICAL GARDEN)

Hortus Botanicus

The Hurtus Botanicus is Holland’s oldest (1590) botanical garden founded by Carolus Clusius, who in 1594 became the first to cultivate tulips in the Country. It’s a living museum with fine collections of orchids, ferns, passi-flora and trees.

Planetarium
PLANETARIUM

Next to Artis's main entrance is a modern building with walls of blue glass surmounted by an enormous copper dome: the Artis Planetarium. Here, from the comfort of an easy chair, we can journey back to the earliest roots of our existence. The huge star projector, which nestles within the 20-metre dome like a giant insect, faithfully reproduces the celestial bodies of the night sky. The Artis Planetarium, with its enormous projection dome of 640 square metres, is not only equipped with the famous Zeiss star projector, but also has at its disposal over 100 projectors for displaying slides, videos and special effects.

AQUARIUM

On December 1882, the Aquarium was opened to the public. In 1997 the historic Great Hall was restored to its former glory, with the salt water systems on the left and the fresh water on the right. The building was fitted with four giant new aquariums. These mammoth tanks each house very different ecosystems: the Amazonian flooded forest, the tropical coral reef and the Amsterdam canal. Last but not least, the amphibians were given a prominent place opposite the Amsterdam canal. The Artis Aquarium houses some 300 species of fish, amphibians and evertebrates.

HOLLANDSCHE SCHOUWBURG (THE DUTCH THEATRE)

From 1892 until 1941 the Hollandsche Schouwburg (The Dutch Thetare) was an important theatre in Amsterdam's Plantage neighbourhood. During the Second World War the Nazis requisitioned the theatre as a point of assembly. Nowadays the Hollandsche Schouwburg is a memorial of the period. The memorial lists the 6,700 surnames of the 104,000 Dutch Jewish victims, engraved on the wall. There is also an exhibition on the persecution of Jewish, telling the story of the role of the Hollandsche Schouwburg in detail.

NEDERLANDS SCHEEPVAARTMUSEUM (NETHERLAND’S MARITIME MUSEUM)

Scheepvaartmuseum

The Maritime Museum (dated 1655) accommodates one of the largest and finest maritime collections in the world, including paintings by Mesdag and Savery, globes and the famous maps drawn by Blaeu. Moored at the jetty is a beautiful replica of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) ship ‘Amsterdam’. In a recent renovation campaign this eyecatcher’s authentic interior has been restored with a cabin, a bread, gunpowder and cheese storeroom.

Nemo
NEMO SCIENCE CENTER AMSTERDAM

The NEMO Science & Technology Center is the largest interactive science museum in the Netherlands. NEMO offers exhibits on natural science, technology and biological/behavioral sciences. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the museum also boasts a panoramic view of Amsterdam from its rooftop.
